MSM, also called MSM Sulfur, is a unique all natural substance found in
relatively high concentrations in all our body tissues. Officially it is
called methylsulfonylmethane. Historically,
its best source for humans has
been raw foods
- all plants concentrate the MSM that their roots naturally
collect from rain water. If we would eat all our food fresh and raw, our diet
would contain an abundant supply of MSM. Unfortunately, the organic sulfur is
lost with almost any processing,
like cooking, canning, drying, or even long term storage.
So MSM is neither a medicine nor a drug, it is a dietary element found
naturally in many foods.
It should never be confused with the inorganic sulfur
compounds
used to preserve foods, or the sulfa drugs, which can cause allergic
reactions in some people. In fact, acute, intermediate and long term studies
indicate that MSM exhibits very low toxicity, even at relatively high dosages.
How low? About eight times less toxic than table salt, MSM's toxicity profile
is similar to that of glycerine and water! Amazingly,
experts find MSM among
the safest supplements available.
It is even reported to help reduce the
body's allergic reaction to many normal allergens.
There have been many studies that suggest all sorts of
possible health
benefits, including help with arthritis, allergies, asthma, migraine
headaches, energy and alertness, sports pain, inflamation, chronic
constipation, parasites, an increase in the body's ability to produce insulin,
carpal tunnel, muscle cramps and back pain, and speeding wound healing.
A lot
of good information about MSM can be found on the Internet, in books and health
magazines. We offer two interesting and informative
books
to help you learn
about this fantastic nutrient.
How is it taken?
The most economical way is to simply mix a small amount of
the powder into a half glass of water, or juice. Since MSM has a slightly
bitter taste, many people quickly drink the half glass of water mixed with MSM
and follow it with a glass of juice.
Another way is to do what a friend in West Virginia recommends... He mixes ½
teaspoon of powder with a big pinch (about 1/8 teaspoon) cream of tartar
(usually found with spices or baking supplies) and one tablespoon of honey.
When it is thoroughly mixed, he adds about 8 ounces of water. This actually
makes a drink that tastes good! It is often recommended to start with half
this amount at one time.
On the other hand, for convenience some people prefer to take their MSM in
capsules. Either way, researchers suggest that
vitamin C taken with the MSM
can be even more helpful.
